ITERA is set to become a centre of excellence in science and technology for Sumatra, strengthening the island's competitiveness by developing skilled people, especially outstanding engineering graduates. Strategically located right next to the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road, ITERA continues to expand its facilities, from lecture buildings, engineering laboratories, and student dormitories to supporting facilities such as a solar power plant. These facilities are built in partnership with government ministries, state-owned enterprises, and private companies. The campus also hosts a botanical garden of about 75 hectares that serves as a centre for conserving Sumatran flora.

The 1 MWp ITERA Solar Power Plant (PLTS) was built on a 1-hectare site through a partnership between Institut Teknologi Sumatera, PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk, and PT Surya Utama Nuansa (SUN). It is the largest solar power laboratory built on a university campus in Indonesia.

In line with its vision of a smart, friendly, and forest campus, ITERA turns the abundant tropical sunshine into electricity while keeping environmental sustainability at the forefront.

System and use

  • The plant runs as a battery-free on-grid system, exchanging (exporting and importing) electricity with the state utility PLN. This keeps construction costs down, since batteries are the most expensive part of a solar plant.
  • The plant gives ITERA its Renewable Energy Laboratory, a research centre open to the ITERA community as well as to the wider public in Sumatra and across Indonesia.
  • ITERA became the first university in Indonesia to declare itself an Energy-Independent Campus, and serves as a showcase for renewable energy technology in Sumatra.

Read moreShow less

Since 2022, ITERA, through the Land Unit of its Occupational Health and Safety office (UPT K3), has partnered with Suhita Bee Farm to keep bees on campus. The ITERA grounds have many acacia trees, whose nectar suits bees well.

The partnership

The partnership runs on a profit-sharing basis: Suhita Bee Farm supplies the colonies and hives, ITERA provides the sites, and the honey harvest is split 50:50. The aim is to grow it into a research centre for high-quality, high-value pure honey.

Hives and bee species

  • 33 hives are spread across quiet, shady, densely planted acacia sites that protect the bees from pests such as birds and ants.
  • All 33 hives house Heterotrigona itama, a stingless bee that produces a sour-tasting honey. It nests in tree trunks, is active during daylight, and returns to the hive at night. Its honey is harvested by suction with a special machine.
  • Apis mellifera, a stinging bee whose honey tends to be sweet, is being trialled at one site. Its hives use large frame boards to make harvesting easier.

The first harvest yielded 8.2 kg of honey. Since then the hives have produced an average of 12 kg of honey per month.
